Sasaram, Oct 19: Setting a record of sorts, a district court in Bihar on Thursday concluded the trial, including examination of witnesses in a single day and convicted a youth for attempting to rape a minor.

Rohtas district and sessions judge Arun Kumar Srivastava pronounced Deonath of Dhawa village under Nokha police station guilty of attempting to rape the girl on July 23 and sentenced him to rigorous imprisonment for five years.

Srivastava concluded the deposition of the complainant, victim, witnesses and defendant during the proceedings which lasted for over five hours.

This was perhaps the first case in Bihar in which the trial was concluded in a single day and judgement pronounced.

Man gets 10-year sentence

A Delhi court has sentenced a former Delhi Police head constable to ten years rigorous imprisonment for raping his minor niece whom he had taken in adoption from her natural parents.

Raj Kumar Sharma, 60, was held guilty of sexually assaulting and raping his niece for 12 years during her stay with him since she was three-year-old.

"...The prosecution has established beyond doubt that the accused sexually exploited the prosecutrix during her stay with him in Delhi and after her departure to Rewa in Madhya Pradesh (for higher education)," additional sessions judge S P Garg said convicting him.

The court rejected Sharma's defence that he was implicated in the case as there was a property dispute with the girl's family.

The victim herself had registered a complaint against her uncle at the Defence Colony police station on January 31, 2004 in this regard and even had said that she had attempted suicide to get rid of the sexual exploitation and mental agony.

Man gets 10-yr RI for raping minor

A Delhi court on Thursday sentenced a 55-year-old man to ten years' rigorous imprisonment for commiting rape upon a minor girl in north-west Delhi three years ago.

"The main prosecution witness - the 11-year-old girl with whom the incident of rape has happened, has fully supported the case of the prosecution," the additional sessions judge Satnam Singh observed, finding Badri of Shakarpur here guilty for the offence under Section 376 (rape) of the IPC.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1000 on him.

According to the prosecution, the girl, who was playing with her brother at her home at Shakarpur on February 10, 2003, was ravished by the convict after enticing her away to a secluded place.

The convict was caught after about 20-30 people gathered on the spot hearing the shrieks of the girl, they stated.
