Vadodara: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has claimed that political parties started realising the importance of the Women's Reservation Bill after the BJP adopted an unanimous resolution regarding reservation for women in 1994.

"BJP had realised the importance of women and that is why it decided to pass a resolution in the national convention of the party held in Vadodara in 1994 and sought reservation of seats for women in the Parliament and the state Assemblies," Modi said addressing the Mega Women’s Convention (Virat Mahila Sammelan) of Central Gujarat here on Saturday.

Afterwards, other political parties took up the issue, he added.

Modi hoped that Governor Kamla Beniwal would give her assent to the Women's Reservation Bill, passed by the state Assembly during its last session, which will allow reservation of 50 percent seats in the local civic bodies and panchayats in the state.

Modi disbursed various welfare schemes to women beneficiaries at this convention. Over 1,800 women from Central Gujarat were given away assets and cash assistance worth Rs 79 lakh under various women welfare and development schemes.
