Bangalore: BJP Government in Karnataka on Wednesday
suo motu withdrew the controversial Karnataka Cow Slaughter
Prevention and Livestock Protection (amendment) Bill 2009 in
the wake of criticism against ban on cow slaughter.
Minister for Animal Husbandry Revunaik Bilamagi, who
moved a motion in the assembly seeking to withdraw the bill,
however, did not specify what prompted them to take the action
even after Opposition Congress members, including its leader
Siddaramaiah and Deputy Leader T B Jayachandra sought to know
the reason.
Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs S Suresh Kumar
and Speaker K G Bopaiah said rule 107 of the Rules of
Procedure and Conduct in Business provides powers to the
government to withdraw any bill.
Siddaramaiah and others said the government should not
re-introduce the bill at a later period.
He charged that the government was withdrawing the bill
with an eye on the coming Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palika
(city corporation) polls.
