Chandigarh: The much delayed 110 km rail
link which will connect this city with Punjab's industrial
town Ludhiana would be ready by the end of 2011, a senior
official of the Northern Railways (NR) said on Wednesday.
Despite nearly half of the work of the link, work on which
started eight years back, having been completed up to Morinda
in 2006 the work on remaining portion had got delayed due to
land acquisition and some "operational problems", Divisional
Railways Manager, NR, Ambala Division, H K Jaggi said
addressing a press conference here.
He informed that the electrification work on
Chandigarh-Morinda section should be completed by end of next
month.
He said the work on 20 km portion of the 51 km
Morinda-Ludhiana was already under progress while the railways
had last month acquired the land on the remaining 30 km
stretch, for which tenders for various works would be invited
soon.
"By the end of 2011, the Chandigarh-Ludhiana rail link
should be ready," he said.
To a question, he said that they will also examine
feasibility of running a train between Chandigarh and Amritsar
in future while the demand for a direct train from here to
Mumbai was also being examined.
Touching on the security aspect, Jaggi said that under the
Integrated Security Plan of the Railways, the NR had been
sanctioned Rs 62 crore, which would be utilised on improving
security at the stations and on trains.
