Vadodara: Compulsory voting is nothing but autocracy, said Congress general secretary and former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh Digvijay Singh here.

Talking to PTI here late last night, Digvijay Singh asked, "How can you make it compulsory when it is voluntary and it is against the spirit of fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution?"

What about those defaulters not casting their votes due to various reasons including marriages, out of city, poor health, going abroad etc which are not spelt out, he said.

According to the Congress leader, Constitution has given all citizens a right to vote but it does not allow voting to be made compulsory.

Singh was here on a private visit to attend a marriage ceremony in the city.

PP TAWAR - India
In democratic India, our constitution enshrines freedom of speech, expression and an independent decsion on important matters to one and all. Therefore, people can not be compelled to vote compulsarily, as being ordered by Gujarat CM Narendra Modi. As rightly said by Digvijay Singh, compulsary voting in Gujarat, enforced by the CM Narendra Modi is nothing, but `autocracy` which should be discouraged, vehemently.

V.M.Puri - India
The public has some responsibility for the election of the right people. The guidance to the public is the responsibility of the leaders.Modi does not say that you vote for the the specific party. You can give the choice of none liked by you,but you must be aware of what is happening around and thus involvement of the public in the entire process of the polity. Mr. Digvijay this is all beyond you as you are too selfish and thinking or interested to involve the public.
