New Delhi: Film-star turned politician
Raj Babbar will be the Congress candidate for the Firozabad
parliamentary constituency in Uttar Pradesh for which
bye-elections are to be held shortly.
The candidature of Babbar, who lost the last Lok Sabha
election from Fatehpur Sikri, was announced by AICC in-charge
Oscar Fernandes today.
The seat has been vacated by Akhilesh Yadav who won
from two constituencies, Kannauj and Firozabad, in the last
Lok Sabha polls. He preferred to retain Kannauj.
Babbar, formerly in the SP, won from Agra
parliamentary constituency in the 2004 polls.
He joined the Congress after his relationship with top
SP leadership strained and then contested from Fatehpuri Sikri
in the 2009 polls on a Congress ticket, but lost by a small
margin.
Firozabad is the only constituency in UP for which
bye-elections are to be held.
