New Delhi, Nov 27: The Congress today condemned the group clashes in Assam, especially the incident in which an Adivasi woman protester was stripped.

"It is most unfortunate that group clashes in Assam have resulted in the death of one person and grievous injuries to several others," Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi told reporters.

"In particular, Congress condemns the shameful, barbaric incident of an Adivasi woman being stripped by miscreants. It is most unfortunate that in a country like ours, which is a proud democracy, the largest democracy, that this kind of approach is shown to the rights of an individual, a woman, an Adivasi," he said.

Asked if the condemnation of the incidents amounted to admonishing the Congress government in the state, Singhvi said one should not see politics in everything.

"The Chief Minister has given categorical instructions that such incidents will not be tolerated and steps are being taken to bring the situation under control," he added.

Singhvi said the speed with which the miscreants have been arrested is laudatory.

"Anybody who does this kind of a shameful act deserves to be condemned," he added.
