New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Thursday
directed MCD to pay compensation of Rs 15 lakh to the families
of two boys whose bodies were found in a seven-feet deep pit
dug by the civic body at Shakurpur area in December last year.
A Division Bench of Chief Justice A P Shah and Justice
Rajiv Sahai Endlaw asked MCD to give Rs 7.5 lakh to each
victim and said the court would pass a detailed order later.
Expressing its displeasure over the status report
filed by the SHO over the mishap earlier, the Bench directed
the investigation to be carried out by the Crime Branch.
The Bench took suo motu cognizance of the incident
after bodies of Arishit (4) and Arman (8) were found floating
in the pit, which was dug up by MCD workers and was filled
with water upto five feet, on December 1, 2009.
The Court's order of compensation came on a petition
filed by the parents of the victims seeking the same.
Earlier, MCD had informed the Court that it had
suspended five of its staff members, including two Beldars and
two gardeners who had dug up the pit.
