New Delhi: Delhi Police on Tuesday claimed to have cracked the MCD toll plaza robbery case with the arrest of five persons, including a "most wanted criminal" of western Uttar Pradesh.

The arrested have been identified as Amit Malik (26), the most wanted criminal, Ankur Sharma (25), Atul Sachdeva (30), Krishan Pal (30) and Sanjeev Tomer (25), who gave information to the gang about toll plaza workers. They were caught near Cross River Mall in east Delhi.

Eight stolen luxury vehicles along with looted cash Rs 1.80 lakh were recovered, police said, claiming that they have solved nine cases of auto-theft and robbery.

Malik is allegedly involved in at least 18 cases, including those in Indrapuram, Madhu Vihar and Janakpuri.

The gang had on December two last year allegedly overpowered the employees at the toll plaza in Ghazipur on gun point and decamped with Rs 19.35 lakh lying with the cashier.

During interrogation, police claimed, Malik told them that with the help of his informers, he targeted the toll plaza. All the gang members shared the looted booty.

"Amit Malik also disclosed that with the help of his associates Ankur and Sachdeva, he got safe hideouts in NCR region and they also provided him fake registration certificates for the stolen and robbed vehicles," Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) K C Dwivedi said.

He also claimed that an employee at the toll plaza, Tomer, gave the tip-off about the time and date when a large amount of cash would there.

"He (Malik) is the top most wanted criminal of Western UP and is a terror in Western UP," Dwivedi said, adding he loves to roam around in luxury vehicles.

Sharma, a BCom graduate, is an alleged car thief and is a mediator for selling cars to dealers in Greater Noida.

Sachdeva is a car dealer and helps criminals in getting stolen vehicles and disposal of stolen vehicles.
