Mumbai: The Bombay High court on Thursday stayed the Maharashtra government's decision to allow students who failed in upto two subjects in the standard ten examination to obtain admission in the next class.

The government had said the ATKT (allowed to keep term) provision would be granted to such students so that they could take admission into standard eleven.

Adjourning the hearing on the matter till August 27, the court sought all the records pertaining to the decision from the state government.

The ATKT provision was announced on July 20 this year.

Under the provision, students who failed in one or two subjects in their SSC (Secondary School Certificate) standard tenth examination could take admission to junior college provided they clear the pending subjects by March 2010.

However, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad filed a PIL taking objection to the decision on the grounds that there was no infrastructure to cater to the nearly two lakh additional students who could get admission through the ATKT system.
