Imphal: Indefinite curfew, imposed since Tuesday night, in Imphal East and Imphal West districts of Manipur was relaxed for four hours in the early hours Thursday to enable people to buy essential items but was re-imposed following widespread protests, official sources said.

Sources said curfew was re-imposed from 9 a.m. again in the two districts in view of the tense situation as widespread protests were reported from various parts of the valley districts against the killing of Ch Sanjit (27) by police commandos in alleged fake encounter on July 23.

Hundreds of people late last night defied indefinite curfew in interior parts of the two districts and took out torch rallies to protest the killing of Sanjit by police commandos.

A pregnant woman was also killed by stray bullets on July 23 at Imphal market complex while five persons were injured.

Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh had said yesterday that a judicial enquiry had been ordered into July 23 incident and six police commandos, including an assistant sub inspector, were suspended from services in connection with the incident.
