Mumbai: Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil on Thursday said a proposal would be sent to the Centre for increasing punishment in cases of crimes against women.

"We would send a proposal to the Centre to increase the punishment in crimes against women and strengthen the laws," Patil informed the Legislative Council.

The minister also announced to set up a Women Security Committee comprising women doctors, lawyers, professors and NGO representatives, he said.

The post of councillors would be soon filled, he added.

Patil said police would be directed to file charge sheet within 60 days in rape cases and to submit medical reports in three weeks.

Shiv Sena MLC Neelam Gorhe raised the issue of rise in number of crime cases against women in the state.

"The crime rate against women has gone up by 5.4 per cent in Pune region alone and the Government should address the issue," she said.
