Bangalore: The Karnataka State Human Rights
Commission (KSHRC) has registered a suo moto case against the
city civic corporation, Bangalore Bruhut Mahanagara Palike, in
connection with the death of 18-month old infant, who was
washed away after he fell into an open storm drain.
The KSHRC, which registered the case last week, has also
asked the civic body to scale up the compensation amount from
Rs one lakh to five lakh to the family, KSHRC sources said
here today.
The KSHRC chairman S R Nayak has demanded a detailed
report from BBMP on the precautionary measures being taken,
like remodelling of walls and fencing the drains.
The infant, Vijay, was washed away when he fell into it
while playing on September 16. All efforts to trace his body
despite a massive search proved futile.
On May 31, a six-year-old boy met with the same fate when
he fell into an open drain while walking with his mother.
Meanwhile, the government has directed BBMP officials to
survey and identify encroached layouts and constructions
alongside drains in the civic limits and to take up desilting
work in the lakes to avoid flooding.
