Agartala: Opposition Indigenous Nationalist
Party of Tripura (INPT), a tribal organisation, on Friday demanded
withdrawal of Disturbed Area Act from Tripura, which is
allegedly causing harassment to the people living in remote
areas of the state.
"We have demanded it's immediate withdrawal from the
state because it causes harassment to people and when the Left
Front Government is claiming that the insurgency is on the
wane then why do they continue to impose it", INPT general
secretary Rabindra Debbarma told agency today.
The act is imposed under the provision of Armed Forces
Special Power Act (AFSPA) in 40 police station areas of the
state, which was reinforced in October last, for six months.
He alleged that the state machinery would use the act as
their political instrument before the elction of 30-member
Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomus District Council (TTAADC),
scheduled to be held in May.
Debbarma said the state government had enforced the act
since February 16,1997, to persecute the tribal people and it
has always been misused by security personnel in the remote
and tribal dominated areas.
