Agartala: Extremist violence in Tripura has declined, but not disappeared because of existence of insurgents camps in Bangladesh, state Governor, D Y Patil said on Tuesday.

"In Tripura, the menace of extremist activities has lessened, but not disappeared as many base camps of these groups across the border remain intact enabling them to continue their onslaught in a different manner," Patil said in his address in the state assembly.

Stating that the security forces were taking proactive measures for increased security, he said, to prevent infiltration by insurgents, the remaining portion of about 200 km of border fencing needed to be completed expeditiously.

Tripura has an 856 km border with Bangladesh. Patil said, 369 extremists surrendered last year.
