Karuna's remark on assembly polls keeps all guessing

Tiruchirapalli: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, known for his enigmatic political remarks by punning Tamil words, today left journalists puzzled on a question on the state assembly polls.

Asked if the elections would be held immediately after the World Classical Tamil Conference scheduled for June at Coimbatore, Karunanidhi said "Terdal (elections) Kaiyaduthnan" which could mean immediately after the conference or with the hand (Kai), the election symbol of the Congress.

His remarks assumed significance amid reports that the Congress was toying with the idea of facing the assembly polls next year either on its own or in alliance with AIADMK.

While AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa, in an interview, did not rule out an alliance with Congress, Karunanidhi had asserted that the DMK-Congress alliance would continue for the assembly polls. The Congress had been maintaining a studied silence on the issue.

The assembly polls are due in 2011.
