Lucknow: A day after the 40-hour long standoff between police and an indiscriminately firing youth in the city, case has been registered against his father for possessing cartridges above the permissible number on Saturday.

A case has been filed at the Bakshi Ka Talab police station and the licensed gun of Dr Shabbir Ahmed and the remaining cartridges have been seized, police sources said here today.

Action was also being initiated to cancel the licence of Ahmed, who is running a clinic in the area.

The rescue mission took over 40 hours only because Shameem Ahmed (27), had with him a large number of cartridges. As per rules, his father was licensed to keep a maximum of ten cartridges.

Police had faced a gruelling task to rescue the youth, who had locked himself up in a room at his Indaura village house, at 2 am on Wednesday night and started firing with the licensed DBBL gun.

Initially, Shameem's family members and police had attempted to counsel him to open the door but when he refused to relent, water cannon, tear gas and intoxicants were used to bring him out.

In firing two policemen, including a sub-inspector, had sustained injuries. He had fired at least 20 rounds, police said.
