Nagpur: The state police would soon launch a special drive to check exploitation of children in the form of their employment in manufacturing units and for begging, Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil said here on Tuesday.

Replying to a calling attention motion moved by Kiran Pawaskar (Shiv Sena), Patil told the Legislative Council that exploitation of children was a reality and the government was serious about putting an end to it.

Children are often mutilated so as to be used for begging purposes, he said.

The special drive would be undertaken with the help of non-government organisations. The Mumbai police had launched a similar drive two years ago and had achieved good results, Patil said, adding that over 13,000 children had been rescued from exploitation, he said.

A special cell for missing persons and for detecting cases of child labour has been created in the state police department, he said, adding that a website on missing children too would soon be launched.
