Lucknow: Major rivers in Uttar Pradesh have started receding, even as some areas continued to remain flooded, official sources said here.

While Ganga is receding in Kanpur, Allahabad, Varanasi, Mirzapur, Ghazipur and Ballia, river Gomti has started receding in Lucknow and Sitapur, Central Water Commission report said.

However, Gomti continue to rise in Jaunpur and Sultanpur, it said.

Similarly, except Katarnia Ghat (Bahraich), Ghagra was receding in Ayodhya, Barabanki and Turtipar (Ballia), it said.

Meanwhile, Relief Commissioner SN Shukla said that the district magistrates of flood affected areas had been asked to initiate relief and rescue operations on war footing.

The directives have also been issued to ensure cleaning in the flood affected areas to prevent spread of disease there, he said.
