Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has strongly advocated state funding of elections as he believed that they were the main cause for corruption in the country.

The Chief Minister also said that he was firmly in favour of holding simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.

Chouhan said that frequent elections not only effect development works but also lead to spread in corruption which can be controlled only by reducing their frequency.

At the time of elections, all political parties including the Congress and BJP have to depend on donations which do not come from the common man but from prominent industrialists and really rich persons, he said.

"It was natural that those who give donations exert pressure on the government to protect their interests," the Chief Minister said.

Barring a few examples, most of the donations were made with black money and this led to increase in corruption, he said.
