Mumbai: As part of its modernisation
plan, Mumbai Police today acquired India's first 'armoured
capsule' based light bulletproof vehicles.
The two 'Marksman' assault vehicles, manufactured by
Mahindra Defence Systems (MDS), are designed to provide
foolproof protection to police, security and special forces
against firing and grenade attacks, Joint Police Commissioner
K L Prasad said here.
"The assault vehicles would help us to face the
terrorists effectively. Even if the terrorists are equipped
with advanced weapons, the policemen can go very near to the
site and attack them," he said.
Following the last November's Mumbai terror attacks,
Maharashtra Government has been modernising the police force
and purchasing modern weapons and equipment.
"The security personnel can aim the target from within
the vehicle and gun down the enemy," Prasad said adding, "the
city police would receive nine more armoured capsule bullet
proof vehicles soon."
With today's addition, the 40,000-strong Mumbai Police
have so far acquired six assault vehicles of different types.
MDS spokesperson Raghu Raman said Mumbai Police was
the first police force in India to be equipped with the
'Marksman. The vehicle is also India's first armoured capsule
based light bulletproof vehicle, he added.
