Aizawl, July 04: It is not swine flu, but swine fever that has killed at least a hundred pigs in Mizoram's Kolasib district, officials said on Saturday.

"Our district veterinary officials have diagnosed the disease and found that it could not be H1N1 virus. It is swine fever, which cannot be transmitted to human beings," Joint Director of the state veterinary department Saingura Sailo said.

"This kind of swine fever was first detected in 1980 and a large number of pigs have fallen prey to the disease since then," he said.

He, however, advised people not to consume the meat of the dead pigs.

The dreaded swine flu is yet to be detected in the state even as the state government continues its ban on import of pigs from the two neighbouring countries - Myanmar and Bangladesh.
