Panaji: Goa's Opposition leaders on Thursday
criticised Chief Minister Digamber Kamat for projecting the
state as an unsafe destination for tourists.
"Government should provide security to tourists 24 hours
and for that you need to take action against the accused like
the one involved in raping a Russian girl," Leader of
Opposition Manohar Parrikar said during the ongoing winter
session of State Legislative Assembly.
Kamat in an earlier discussion had said tourists
holidaying in the state should adhere to certain code of
conduct while venturing out late in the night.
The opposition benches alleged that the police have
goofed up in the Russian girl rape case allowing the accused
to go scot-free.
"Even now, police know where he is and he must have been
told to remain in hiding till public memory fades," Parrikar,
who is also former chief minister, alleged.
Alleging that the Russian girl was asked to water down
the complaint at Colva police station, Parrikar said, "The
investigation of the case gained momentum only after it was
handed over to Crime Branch".
Parrikar also expressed shame on the lewd MMS showing
policemen sexually abusing a woman in official car.
"When a television channel reporter came for my reaction
on the incident, I refused to react. But when he showed me the
MMS clip, I felt so much ashamed," he said.
The BJP leader also termed state Inspector General of
Police K D Singh as a "corrupt officer" who receives favours
in kind from his juniors.
