Kolkata: A poor voters' turnout of over 40 per cent was recorded in the by-election to the Bowbazar and Sealdah assembly constituencies where Trinamool Congress candidates locked horns with Left Front-supported nominees.

West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Debasish Sen told reporters that the polling percentage was quite low compared to 75 to 80 per cent recorded in past elections in the state.

The polling was peaceful in both constituencies.

Trinamool Congress fielded Sikha Mitra, wife of former WBPCC president Somen Mitra who was elected for Lok Sabha on a TC ticket, from Sealdah against CPI candidate Prabir Deb.

From the adjoining Bowbazar seat, TC put up Swarnakamal Saha against LF-backed independent Minati Gomes. BJP fielded Ajay Kumar Vajpayee from the seat.

The by-poll was caused due to disqualification of assembly membership of Sudip Bandodpadhyay and Somen Mitra from Bowbazar and Sealdah respectively after they sided with Trinamool Congress.

Counting of votes for the seats would be taken up on August 21.
