Chandigarh: Punjab Government on Friday urged the Centre to approve two Government Medical Colleges in the state as centres to combat any eventuality arising out of the Influenza A H1N1 (Swine flu) in the state.

A meeting of the Health department presided over by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal here today decided that the state Government would soon approach the Union Health Ministry to direct the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to approve at least two government medical colleges of Amritsar and Patiala as Swine flu test Centres.

An official spokesman said that Badal expressed satisfaction over the preventive measures taken by the State Health Department to face any crisis from the pandemic.

He, however, said that Punjab had been not allotted any centre and rather attached to the PGI, Chandigarh for the treatment of the patients inflicted with Swine Flu.

Justifying the need to have two centers exclusively for Punjab, Badal said that it was not practically feasible for PGI to cover the entire state in case of any exigency related to swine flu.
