New Delhi: Relatives and friends of victims,
not professional gangs, were behind the majority of kidnapping
cases in the national capital this year, police said on Wednesday.
Out of 21 cases of kidnapping for ransom reported in the
national capital this year so far, in 19 cases the accused
were either relatives or business associates or friends.
This was disclosed by Delhi Police Commissioner Y S
Dadwal at a press conference here. "It is not that
professional gangs are involved in kidnappings in the city,"
he said.
"We have worked out 19 out of the 21 cases this year
while in one case, the person came back on his own," Dadwal
added.
Recently, two persons allegedly abducted a copperwire
dealer, with whom one of the accused had business
transactions, for a ransom of Rs two crore. The accused were
arrested and Rs 1.38 crore was recovered.
In another case, a class XII student, Ribu Chawla, was
kidnapped by a person whom he had befriended at a local
gymnasium for a ransom of Rs 15 lakh. Later fearing arrest,
the friend, a body-builder, and his three associates allegedly
killed Chawla.
Dadwal also said that he wanted Deputy Commissioners of
Police at district level to personally check and verify with
senior citizens about their security.
