Kasaragod: CPI(M) Kerala secretary Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday alleged thatdue to "anti-people" policies of the UPA government at the Cente, the gap between the rich and poor were widening in the country.

While there has been marked increase in the number of billionairs in the country from nine to 49 per cent in recent years, about 77 per cent of India's population is earning below Rs 20 a day, Vijayan alleged.

UPA government has all along been adopting "anti- farmer" policies by allowing corporate bodies to have their sway in the farm sector, Vijayan alleged, inaugurating the CPI-M sponsored blockade of Central government offices in Kerala to protest steep hike in price of essential goods.

Accusing the Centre of cutting short the supply of food grains through the Public Distribution System, Vijayan said Kerala which had received 1.13 lakh tons during the tenure of Jawaharlal Nehru has shrunk to 17,000 tons.

The CPI-M in Kerala has announced five-day blockade of Central government offices from March 8 across the state to protest steep hike in prices in essential goods.
