Mangalkot (WB): A ten-member team of the
West Bengal Human Rights Commission on Wednesday visited Dhanyarukhi
village in Burdwan district where a Congress Legislature Party
team was attacked by alleged Marxist supporters on July 15.
The team, led by Assistant Director-General K P
Prabhakar Rao, visited the Mangolkot area to assess the role
of policemen on that day.
Some villagers reportedly told the team members that
only 8-10 police personnel were posted at the village during
the CLP team's visit to the area which had been witnessing
retaliatory violence ever since the killing of CPI(M) leader
Phalguni Mukherjee on June 15.
They told the WBHRC team that womenfolk of the village
were agitated by "presence" of some persons allegedly involved
in Mukherjee's killing accompanying the CLP team.
"When we saw them along with the CLP leaders, we were
angry and hurled stones at them," they said.
However, Additional Superintendent of Police
(Burdwan) Humayun Kabir denied this when reporters asked him
about the truth in the villagers' contention.
