New Delhi: In an apparent case of suicide, a
railway employee reportedly lay before a train when it left
Old Delhi station on Thursday and was run over again by another
train before his body could be picked up, prompting the
authorities to order a probe into the delay in retrieval.
Railway sources said Mahesh Kumar, 50, was travelling in
the local train which ran over him. Based on preliminary
investigation, railway authorities concluded that when the
train reached Old Delhi station at around 9:30 am, Kumar got
down and as it about to depart, he lay in front on the tracks.
Even before his body could be removed, a second local
train ran over him. Sources said the driver of the second
train claimed that he mistook the body to be some luggage.
The authorities feel prima facie this appears to be a
case of suicide.
Kumar worked in the stores department of the Railways.
"The DRM, Delhi Division, has ordered an inquiry into the
incident to ascertain what took the station administration so
long to recover the body before the second train could also
run over him," said a Northern Railway spokesperson.
Sources, however, said the GRP had informed the station
manager about a man being run over, but they failed to act
fast to recover the body.
