Theni (TN), Feb 03: Three students of a higher
secondary school at Periyankulam near here on Tuesday attempted to
commit suicide by consuming poison to express solidarity with
the plight of Tamils in neighbouring Sri Lanka, police said.
The three were rushed to hospital where their condition
was stated to be serious. This is the second such case in the
state, with a youth earlier committing suicide in Chennai on
the issue.
The students of Victoria Memorial Government School here
were reportedly upset after viewing some video clippings of
the sufferings of the Sri Lankan Tamils, they said.
The trio had earlier sought permission of the school
headmaster to observe fast before the school gate which was
denied on the ground that examinations were round the corner.
Police said the students were admitted to the Periyakulam
government hospital and their condition was stated to be
serious.
Earlier, a 26-year-old youth committed suicide on January
29 in Chennai by setting himself ablaze outside the 'Shastri
Bhavan', housing the Central Government offices, "to express
solidarity with the Tamils in Sri Lanka."
