Kolkata: West Bengal Transport minister Subhas Chakraborty was on Tuesday cremated here with full state honours after thousands, in one of the biggest outpourings of grief, paid their last respects to the CPI(M) leader who touched a chord with the masses irrespective of political affilliation.

The last post was sounded and a police contingent gave a gun salute as the 67-year-old leader's body was taken to the Keoratala crematorium in South Kolkata amid slogans -- 'Subhasda amar rahe' and 'Subhas Chakraborty laal salaam.'

Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, several of his cabinet colleagues, CPI(M) politburo member Sitaram Yechuri, Left Front chairman Biman Bose and other Front leaders were present at the crematorium.

Known as a political disciple of CPI(M) patriarch Jyoti Basu, Chakraborty often courted controversies by taking on the party leadership on issues like withdrawal of support to UPA government over Indo-US nuclear deal and not allowing Basu to become prime minister in 1996.

Earlier, the body of Chakraborty, who died fighting cancer yesterday, was taken in a mammoth funeral procession from the CPI(M) state headquarter on Alimuddin Street in central Kolkata as thousands of people lined both sides of the streets to have a glimpse of the leader during his final journey.
