Nandigram: Two more persons have been arrested in connection with the murder of Trinamool Congress Panchayat leader Nishikanta Mondal at Nandigram in East Midnapore district, police said on Thursday.

With the arrest of the two last night, altogether three people have been taken into custody in connection with the murder on Tuesday night, Superintendent of Police Bastab Baidya said.

The third is the wife of a local CPI(M) leader. She was arrested yesterday following complaints by Mondal's family that conspiracy plans were hatched at her residence.

Rina's husband Lakshman Pradhan had been on the run since the last panchayat polls when the Trinamool Congress had trounced the CPI(M).

Meanwhile, a pistol was found from near the spot where Mondal was shot dead by unidentified persons at Sonachura, Baidya said.

The villagers saw the pistol and informed the police who seized the firearm, he said.
