Mumbai: Police opened fire to quell a violent crowd protesting at Nallasopara station in the neighbouring Thane district following a technical snag at a suburban railway station on the Western line.

"Train services on Western line were delayed by 20-30 minutes after an overhead wire snapped at suburban Borivali station," Western Railway Public Relation Officer C David said.

The repairing works were carried out and the wire was also replaced. But aggressive commuters protested at the Nallasopora station and shouted slogans against railway authorities alleging negligence on their part, a railway police official said.

Police had to open fire to control the agitators, the official said adding authorities were engaged in bringing the the situation to normal.

However, no arrest have been made in this connection, he said.

The protesters disrupted road traffic on the Western Express highway between Borivali and Mira Road as local trains were not running as per schedule.

Yesterday rail services on the Western line were disrupted following a technical snag at suburban Bhayander station and trains were delayed by over 45 minutes.
