New Delhi: Political parties and Residents
Welfare Associations today came down heavily on the Delhi
Government for increasing the water tariff while industry
chamber Assocham welcomed the hike saying subsidy on the
precious commodity needs to be gradually phased out.
The main opposition BJP termed the decision as
"atrocious" while CPI(M) held protest demonstrations in many
parts of the city demanding immediate rollback of the hike.
"It is an atrocious decision. The Government has become
totally insensitive to peoples' woes," senior BJP leader V K
Malhotra said.
He said BJP will bring in a no-confidence motion against
the Government in the winter session of the assembly beginning
December 9.
Condemning the decision to hike the tariff, the Delhi
unit of the CPI(M) in a statement slammed the government for
its "insensitivity" to the problems of the common people. The
party organised demonstration across the city demanding
rollback of "anti-people measures".
The Delhi Government yesterday announced upto
two-and-a-half times increase in water tariff, besides putting
an end to the free water scheme that mostly benefitted the
lower income groups.
