Coimbatore: Wife of S A Basha, a life convict in the 1998 serial bomb blasts here, has appealed to the city Police Commissioner to take steps to set him free.

In a petition submitted to Commissioner P Shivanandi, Razitha Begum mentioned that Basha, founder of banned Al-Umma, had already undergone more than 10 years in the prison, including the period as undertrial.

The authorities would release him, if local police agreed for it, she claimed and requested the Commissioner to recommend for his release at the earliest.

Basha is the prime accused in the cases relating to the bomb explosions that killed 58 people and injured nearly 250 in February, 1998 coinciding with the election meeting of BJP leader L K Advani in a city area.

A special court that tried the cases had convicted Basha of criminal conspiracy among other charges.
