Woman MP of first Parliament passes away

Shillong, March 18: Bonily Khongmen, a woman MP in the first Parliament of independent India, died here, her family said today.

Khongmen (94), probably the first woman parliamentarian from the North East, breathed her last at her residence yesterday.

She was also served as the deputy speaker of the Assam Assembly during 1946 and served in that capacity till its dissolution in 1951.

She attended the 10th session of the United Nations in 1953 and worked in the committee of human rights.

After the dissolution of Parliament in 1957, Khongmen was elected member and chairman of the Assam Public Service Commission and later appointed the member of the central body of UPSC from 1963 till 1970.

A social activist, Khongmen was associated with many social and literary organisations of Shillong. She was headmistress of two schools in Shillong.

Her funeral service would be held tomorrow.
