New Delhi: Suspended Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and MP Kirti Azad's wife Poonam Azad joined the Aam Aadmi Party on Sunday.

Shortly before joining AAP, Poonam Azad met Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal at his official residence.

Senior AAP leader Sanjay Singh had announced on 8 November that Poonam, a three-time national executive member of the BJP, would be joining the AAP.

Poonam had contested against the then Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit in the 2003 assembly polls and was serving as a spokesperson of the BJP's Delhi unit.

Sources close to her told IANS that she was miffed with the BJP leadership for ignoring her although she had worked for the party for more than 20 years.

"She was denied ticket in the last two assembly polls only because a senior BJP leader had reservations against the family. Even her son was denied ticket of MCD election," a close aide of Poonam Azad said.

Kirti Azad, elected to the Lok Sabha from Darbhanga in Bihar, was suspended by the BJP after he spoke against corruption in the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) when it was headed by now Finance Minister and BJP stalwart Arun Jaitley.
