DMK, AIADMK struggling to finalise alliances

Chennai: Only a few days may be left for filing nominations for the April 13 assembly polls but the political scene in Tamil Nadu remains fluid with the main contenders DMK and AIADMK still busy holding negotiations for forging alliances.

Both the ruling DMK and opposition AIADMK had demanded postponement of the poll date contending that the time was too short for campaigning. Both of them wanted the elections either in the last week of April or in the first week of May. Barring the Congress, all parties wanted the elections to be put off.

Piqued by the "unreasonable and unjustified" demands of its national ally Congress, DMK yesterday declared that it would withdraw its ministers from the UPA government and would not buckle under "pressures" from the Congress.

However, Congress was hopeful of overcoming the present crisis through backdoor manoeuvres.

The AIADMK front was been able to bring actor Vijaykant's DMDK in its camp but has to still sort out things with its traditional ally MDMK and the Left parties.

The Left and MDMK were reported to be sulking over the "poor" offer made by the AIADMK leadership.

Even the Puthiya Tamizhgam, with which the AIADMK had reached a poll accord, had expressed displeasure on the "meagre" allotment of two seats to it.

To a certain extent, AIADMK supremo Jayalalitha appeared to be better off then DMK in managing to form a rainbow alliance.

The BJP would be going it alone in the state, where it has no foothold.

The filing of nominations will commence from March 19.
