35 injured during Jallikattu

Thirty five persons, including bull tamers and spectators, were injured on Tuesday in the `Jallikattu` (bull taming sport) at Avaniyapuram here, organised as part of "Pongal harvest festival.

Madurai: Thirty five persons, including bull tamers and spectators, were injured on Tuesday in the `Jallikattu` (bull taming sport) at Avaniyapuram here, organised as part of "Pongal harvest festival.

Police said 19 bull tamers, 15 onlookers and a police official sustained minor injuries due to a melee after some bulls ran amok into the crowd.

A total of 388 bulls, including from neighbouring districts, were brought for the event.
A heavy police force was deployed for the event, which was conducted as per the guidelines of Supreme Court and Tamil Nadu Jallikattu Regulation Act in the wake of complaints from animal rights activists about cruelty to animals.
Authorities had made sure that the bulls were not subjected to harassment and administered intoxicants. The bulls were medically examined prior to the event, police said.

Strict vigil was also made to ensure that the bull tamers were not inebriated, they said.
