Coimbatore: Alleging harassment from police and transport authorities including seizure of vehicles about 500 drivers today laid near siege of Regional Transport Office here.

The drivers, who participated in the agitation organised by Joint Committee of Auto Rickshaw Drivers Associations, squatted on the middle of the road in front of RTO Office and raised slogans against the alleged harassment by police and officials.

The committee secretary P K Sukumaran said they had given representation to District Collector and Regional Transpot Officer highlighting the problem being faced by the drivers from police and authorities, in view of the new tariff.

In the name of checking, a lot of time was being wasted and vehicles were taken to the RTO compound if an additional passenger was accommodated, he said.

The passengers used to give extra money over the present meter rate voluntarily, for which police were harassing, he said.
The transport authorites have assured to set right things in a couple of days and not to take action against those who have proper documents, Sukumaran said.
