Vellore (TN): In a shocking daylight robbery, bank staffers carrying Rs 27 lakh in a bag on a two-wheeler were intercepted by two persons on a motorcycle near here and robbed of the money today, police said.

"We are collecting evidence and a probe is on. Though there are some clues, I will not disclose anything now as it may jeopardise the investigation," Vellore Police Superintendent P Vijaya Kumar told PTI.

The two staffers of a public sector bank of Minnal branch near Arakkonam were on their way to office on a two-wheeler on the Arakkonam-Soolagiri route when the motorcycle-borne duo, who were following them, allegedly snatched the bag and rode away after pushing away the bank employees.

Earlier, they had received remittance of Rs 27 lakh from the Salai branch of a private sector bank near Arakkonam.

Following the robbery, police checkposts were alerted and vehicle checks have been intensified in Vellore, Kanchipuram, Tiruvannamalai and Tiruvallur districts.

As Vellore district borders Andhra Pradesh, the police of the neighbouring state have also been alerted.
