Bill to create welfare board for non-resident Tamils adopted

The `Tamil Nadu Non-Resident Tamils` Welfare Bill, when enacted, would address a series of issues including safety and health of non-resident Tamils.

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Assembly on Thursday
adopted a bill for the creation of a welfare board for
non-resident Tamils of the state.

The `Tamil Nadu Non-Resident Tamils` Welfare Bill, when
enacted, would address a series of issues including safety and
health of non-resident Tamils who are "unable to tackle these
problems on their own and resettle."

"Repatriation of dead bodies of non-Resident Tamils,
which require financial assistance and subsequent settlement
of claims is one of the major problems faced by non-Resident
Tamils", the bill said.

Lack of a single agency under the state government which
these Tamils can contact for their redressal of grievances and
guarantee them support had been causing `hindrance` to their
welfare, it said.

"Hence the government has proposed to make a scheme,
constitute a welfare fund and establish a board for
implementing and administering the scheme", it said.

The bill when enacted would involve expenditure from the
consolidated fund of the state.
