Coimbatore: Tension gripped Valparai town in
the district, following reports about abduction of a
candidate, belonging to Puthiya Tamizhagam, for ward no 19, early on Monday.

The 50-year-old Samy was reportedly waylaid by some
unidentified persons in a car, while he was proceeding to
bring his partymen to take them to the polling booth around
4.30 am, official sources said.

When contacted party block secretary, Ramkumar said that he received a call from Samy that he was in a forest area
bordering Kerala and he was taken in a car by some
masked men who tied his hands and leg.

Samy had also spoken to the Returning Officer of Valparai
about the incident at 6.20 am, Ramkumar said.

A panic-like situation is prevailing in the town following
the abduction, though polling was going on smoothly, police said.

A Valparai police station official said a sub inspector
from Mudis police station had talked to Samy and expressed
confidence that he would be detected and brought back safely.

The report of abduction has, however, not yet reached the
District Election Cell in the city, official sources said.

Samy was engaged in a three-cornered contest with AIADMK
and DMK.
