Chennai: A total of over 10,000 police personnel, including top-level officers will be engaged for the two-phase civic polls in the city, as police warned of stringent action against poll-time violence.

With the first phase of polling scheduled tomorrow, a total of 1905 polling booths have been identified as 'sensitive'. In more than 400 such booths, special police pickets have been posted to instill confidence in the public.

"In total,391 Striking Forces from the rank of Commissioner of Police to Inspectors are given which covers all over Chennai to meet any eventuality," a city police release said.

After the poll notification was issued, 102 persons had been detained under Goondas Act, while "preventive action" has been taken against 1367 rowdies and criminals, it said.

"A total of 567 cases of violation of model code of conduct have been registered against all parties," it said adding round the clock checks are being held in lodges while marriage halls would be brought under police control.

"Stringent action will be taken against whoever indulges in any violence during the day of poll. Vehicles of candidates alone with official permission will be allowed near polling booths ," it said.

Apart from the main control rooms, mini control rooms have also been formed for the public to lodge complaints, the release added.
