Ramanathapuram: A Sub Inspector who allegedly shot dead a 30-year-old man after he stabbed him at a police station here has been suspended and a judicial enquiry is on, a top police official said.
"We have suspended A Kalidoss pending completion of a enquiry by a Judicial Magistrate," Ramanathapuram Superintendent of Police, N M Mayil Vahanan told PTI.
A Judicial Magistrate has begun work on inquest. The post mortem has been completed. "The magistrate will look into the cause of death," he said, adding the police department will also be holding an enquiry.
Court sources indicated that the magistrate would soon visit the scene of incident, the SP Pattinam Police Station here and examine witnesses. The inquest report will be later sent to the Chief Judicial Magistrate.
Syed Mohammed was taken to the police station yesterday on a complaint of extorting money from the public. When Sub Inspector A Kalidoss questioned him, he allegedly stabbed the SI, following which the police officer allegedly opened fire in self defence, killing the man on the spot.
The incident led to protests and all round condemnation from Muslim outfits.
