Chennai: In a keenly watched exercise, counting of votes for the Sankarankoil (SC) by poll will be held tomorrow to decide the winner of a multi-cornered contest
with all major political parties testing their fortunes for the first time after the April 2011 Assembly elections.
Counting will commence at 8 AM at an engineering college in Sankarankoil under three-tier security, D Raajendiran, Special Chief Electoral Officer and CEO in-charge, said.
Though the result of the by poll, necessitated due to the death of AIADMK minister C Karuppasamy in October last, would seldom alter the political balance, it nevertheless is being watched keenly.
During a recent spat with her former ally and Opposition Leader Vijayakanth in the state Assembly, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had challenged him to go it alone in this by poll though the two parties had gone their ways in the local bodies polls last year.
AIADMK, DMK, DMDK, MDMK and BJP are in the fray. The Vaiko-led MDMK had contested its first elections since boycotting the April 2011 polls following a breakdown in seat sharing arrangement with then ally AIADMK.
Jayalalithaa had left no stone unturned to stretch her party`s winning streak, after having won the Tiruchirappalli (west) by poll in October last.
DMK has also sought to redeem its lost glory and party chief M Karunanidhi has been hopeful of a good show.
The mandate will be seen as either an endorsement of Jayalalithaa`s populist policies or a warning bell as the state is gripped with unscheduled power cuts.
A day after the by poll, the state cabinet had on Monday given its go ahead for the controversial Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant, which falls in Tirunelveli district.
