Madurai: CPI-M on Tuesday said it would not join hands with DMK in the coming Pudukottai assembly byelection and ruled out supporting a common opposition candidate.
Making clear the party`s stand, CPI-M Tamil Nadu unit secretary G Ramakrishnan said it would also not support the ruling AIADMK, with which the party had an alliance in the 2011 assembly elections.
"We said earlier we will back the CPI candidate as the seat was held by them. But CPI is not contesting. Now there is a talk of a common candidate, under the leadership of DMK, contesting the bypoll. We will not support any common candidate who is proposed or brought to the (opposition) front by the DMK," he told reporters here.
"We have launched a movement against the anti-people stand of the AIADMK. We are not going to support the AIADMK candidate either," he said.
Attacking the Jayalalithaa government for hiking bus fare, electricity tariff and milk price, he said the focus during the bypoll would be on its `anti-people` actions.
Accusing the Central Government of taking anti-people measures under the pretext of economic liberalisation, he said the DMK was not opposing the economic policies.
CPI-M would take a decision on Pudukottai by election shortly after consulting the district unit of the party, he added.
