Demand for arrest of Christian priest in Tamil Nadu

Various Hindu forums here on Thursday demanded the arrest of a Christian priest, who allegedly distributed pamphlets with disparaging content about Hindu Gods and idols and making provocative speeches against the Hindu Gods, police said here on Thursday.

The SB-CID Inspector said they had received series of complaints about the priest and they were awaiting orders from the higher for further action.

"We have to get clearance from the Intelligence Head Quarters to arrest the priest", he said.

The Uthamapalayam police said that there was wordy duel between the local people and the priest as he made derogatory remarks about Hindu gods and after heated exchange some unidentified persons and the priest had exchanged blows. The priest got himself admitted to the hospital, police said.

They said on a complaint from the priest they had arrested three persons and all of them had been remanded to judicial custody.

As the news about the arrest spread the the local people blocked the station and demanded their release. They also demanded the arrest of the priest.

District president of Hindu Munnani Ramaraj said today that they would picket the station if the priest was not arrested on their complaint.
