Dharmapuri case: HC halts publication of Divya`s story

Madras High Court restrained a Tamil bi-weekly from publishing a multi-part article relating to the inter-caste marriage of Dalit youth Illavarasan and a caste Hindu girl and his subsequent death.

Chennai: Madras High Court on Monday restrained a Tamil bi-weekly from publishing a multi-part article relating to the inter-caste marriage of Dalit youth Illavarasan and a caste Hindu girl and his subsequent death.
Justice R Sudhakar granted the interim stay on a petition by Divya, whose marriage to Ilavarasan had set off caste clashes in parts of Dharmapuri District last year culminating in the alleged suicide of her husband last month, and adjourned the further hearing by eight weeks.

Divya contended that the publication of the several-part article titled "Love caste - Illavarasan talks - the real serial" would defame her and her family as the contents might be in the nature of assassination of her character and her family.

She further said five parts of the story already published by the magazine caused mental agony to her.

Three villages of Dharmapuri witnessed caste clashes over the marriage last November and Ilavarasan was found dead along the railway track on July four, a day after Divya categorically said she would live with her mother.
