Do not dump DMK's projects: Karuna to AIADMK

Chennai: DMK president M Karunanidhi on Tuesday hit out at the ruling AIADMK for dropping many of his erstwhile government's projects, saying it should not resort to such a step by branding them as DMK initiatives, but continue with them in people's interest.

Referring to a government announcement that Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Monday had approved the second phase of the 62-km Outer Ring Road project, he said it had been initiated when his government was in power and there was nothing new about it.

He said it had found mention in the policy note of the Highways Department for the year 2009-10 and also after the Jayalalithaa-led government had taken over last year.

The 88-year-old DMK leader said he was pointing this out not to prove they were his government's efforts, but expecting 'similar treatment' for other DMK projects like New Secretariat Complex, Anna Centenary Library or Tamil New year.

"It's my wish to see that projects taken up in the interest of people are continued and not shown any bias. By persisting with them, there will be no ill-reputation (for the ruling government)," he said.

After taking over, the Jayalalithaa-led government has either reversed or dropped initiatives of the previous DMK government, including scrapping the free colour TV scheme, freezing construction on the New Assembly-Secretariat Complex and reversing the Tamil new year to the month of Chithirai (April) from Thai (January).
